コイン収集において、「シルバー」とは、コインの元素組成、具体的には銀の含有量を指します。これは単なる記述的なラベルではなく、本質的な金属価値の定量的測定値です。純度、またはフィネスはパーセンテージ(例:.900または90%)で表されます。このパーセンテージがコインの基礎的な地金価値を決定します。この価値は、希少性、歴史的意義、または美的状態から生じるプレミアムである、そのコインの収集価値とは別物です。一般的な同等概念は金属の鑑定(assay)です。

価格への影響
