Methodology: How We Compute Resale Values — JunkPal

Every value on JunkPal starts from the same place: what real buyers actually paid. This page explains exactly how the numbers are made, where the catalog comes from, how fresh the data is, and what the numbers are not.

What a “JunkPal value” is

A JunkPal value is the monthly median of real closed eBay sales for one specific item in one specific condition tier — Loose, Complete (CIB), or Sealed for games; Ungraded through PSA 10 for cards and comics; condition grades for everything else. The median is the middle sale of the month: half of buyers paid more, half paid less. We use the median rather than the average so one record-breaking auction can’t drag the number away from what a typical sale looks like.

Sold values and asking prices are never mixed. The live eBay listings you see on a page are current *asks* — what sellers hope to get today — shown in their own section and labeled as such. Asks are never averaged into sold medians. A value with no recent sold history behind it simply isn’t published; we don’t fill gaps with guesses.

Where the data comes from

The catalog of 13+ million items is assembled from 22 data feeds — price archives, community reference databases, retail listings, and open data projects:

  • Marketplace sales data — real closed eBay sales (sold comps), refreshed continuously
  • Licensed collector-market databases — video games, sports cards, trading cards, comics, LEGO, coins, Funko
  • Community & reference databases — vinyl & music, books, LEGO set inventories
  • Retail & listing data — major retail and listing feeds across electronics, music gear, and used tech
  • Open product data — open barcode & product catalogs
  • Human curation — manual entries verified by the JunkPal team

Sold-price history comes from eBay completed-sales data; JunkPal is not affiliated with or endorsed by eBay Inc.

How fresh the numbers are

  • Sold values — recomputed monthly from the latest closed eBay sales. Every priced page shows when its numbers were last updated.
  • Live listings — asking prices are refreshed daily on demand by our listing worker, straight from eBay.
  • The pages themselves — re-rendered hourly, so the medians, listings, and charts you see are at most about an hour behind the database.

What the numbers are not

JunkPal values are estimates derived from real historical sales — not appraisals, offers to buy, or guarantees of what any specific item will sell for. Condition, timing, photos, and pure luck all move real-world results; two “Loose” copies can sell days apart for noticeably different prices.
