意味するもの

ダイエラーとは、コインの打刻プロセス中に導入された物理的な異常です。これは単なる摩耗や損傷ではなく、ダイそのもの、あるいは打刻動作における欠陥を指します。一般的な例としては、ダブルダイ(ダイのずれによりデザイン要素が繰り返し現れたりぼやけたりする現象)、オフセンター(デザインがフルフラン(コインの金属部分)を埋め尽くしていない状態)、クリッピング(縁から金属が削り取られること)などがあります。「ダイエラー」は、ユニークな標本を生み出す製造上の欠陥に対する専門用語です。

価格への影響

価格への影響は非常に変動的です。認識され、重大なダイエラーは、標準的な標本と比較してコインの価値を10倍以上に高めることがあります。軽微で一般的なエラー(わずかなオフセンターなど)は、標準価格の1.2倍から2倍程度にしかならないかもしれません。ダイの完全な破損や深刻なダブルリングのような大きなエラーは、数万ドルのプレミアムを生むことがあります。標準的な1955年リンカーンセントがバラで$0.50で売れると仮定します。もしそれが文書化された重大なダブルエラーを持っていれば、エラーの種類によって$500以上になる可能性も十分にあります。

見分け方

特定には高倍率の拡大が必要です。ダブルダイの場合、10倍以上の倍率で文字や日付のフィールドを調べると、ぼやけではなく、はっきりとした平行線として二重化が見えます。オフセンターは、デザインの周りに見える余白の金属量で明白です。販売者は、リム(縁)を含めたコイン全体、および影響を受けた部分の接写を含む高解像度の写真を提供しなければなりません。「エラーレプリカ」(エラーを模倣するように意図的に加工されたコイン)には注意が必要です。本物のエラーは既知の製造工程と一致しますが、偽物は完璧すぎたり、逆にあまりにも素人っぽすぎたりすることが多いです。

エラーコインにプレミアムを支払うのは、そのエラーが文書化され、検証可能であり、確立された貨幣学の権威によって認められている場合にのみ正当化されます。エラーが軽微で容易に再現可能な欠陥である場合、プレミアムは過大評価されている可能性が高いです。公正な取引とは、単にエラーの存在だけでなく、その*来歴(provenance)*を反映した価格設定を意味します。ディーラーが裏付けとなる文書や専門家のグレーディングなしに「重大なエラー」を主張する場合、価格が高すぎる可能性が高いです。

コインをリストアップする際は、正確な専門用語を使うことが極めて重要です。「損傷コイン」と記載する代わりに、「Doubled Die Error, [特定の場所]」のように記載します。リストに追加する上で最も価値のある要素は、レイキングライト(表面に対して鋭い角度から光を当てる照明)の下で撮影された高解像度の写真です。この光はダイ表面の微妙な違いを際立たせ、購入者がエラーの存在と深刻度を視覚的に確認できるようにし、それによってプレミアム価格を正当化します。
