クリッピングとは?

意味するもの

クリッピングとは、硬貨の縁や地金から意図的に少量の金属を取り除く行為です。これは摩耗(wear)ではなく、素材の除去です。この行為は、偽造品(「クリップされた偽造品」)を作成するため、あるいは既存の硬貨の外観を意図的に変更するために行われることがほとんどです。貨幣学(numismatics)においては、これは損傷または改変の一形態として分類されます。一般的な同等概念は「金属の損失(metal loss)」または「損傷(damage)」です。その深刻度は、除去された金属の割合と切断された場所によって判断されます。クリッピングされた硬貨は、本質的に元の状態から変化しています。

価格への影響

クリッピングは、ほぼ例外なく深刻な価値の低下を招きます。その影響は線形(linear)的ではないことが多く、わずかな傷よりも、体系的で大きな金属の除去の方がダメージは大きいです。一般的な流通硬貨の場合、クリッピングされた標本は、完璧な状態の例と比較して40%から80%の価値減を見せることがあります。希少な硬貨の場合、その減少は壊滅的で、高グレードのコレクターにとっては事実上価値がないものになることもあります。たとえ金属の損失が最小限であっても、クリッピングが目立つ場合、わずかでもクリッピングされている硬貨は、クリッピングされていない同種の硬貨の価値の10〜30%でしか売れない可能性が高いです。

見分け方

クリッピングされた硬貨にプレミアムを支払うのは、クリッピング自体が特定のグレーディングサービスによって認められたユニークで文書化されたバリアント(variant)を作り出しているなど、非常に特殊でニッチなシナリオでのみ正当化されます。一般的な収集や転売においては、プレミアムを支払うことはめったに正当化されません。目に見えてクリッピングされた硬貨の公正な取引とは、価格がその損傷を反映している状態、つまり提示価格が同等のクリッピングされていない例よりも大幅に低いことです。損傷が広範囲に及んでいる場合、その硬貨は収集品としてではなく、損傷した標本として見るのが最善です。
