リージョナルロックとは、ビデオゲーム機やディスク/カートリッジが指定された地理的領域外で機能することを妨げるハードウェアまたはソフトウェア上の制限のことです。これは単に言語の問題ではなく、地域の電気規格、コンソールファームウェア、またはデジタルストアフロントとの互換性を規定する特定のコーディングに関わっています。コレクターにとって、これは使用上の明確な障壁となります。例えば、北米(NTSC-U/C)のゲームがヨーロッパ(PAL)のコンソールで起動しない、あるいはその逆といったことが起こります。端的に言えば、地理に基づいた非互換性です。
