In the collecting niche, this is known as an autograph or inscription. It moves the item from being a mass-produced piece of media to a unique piece of signed memorabilia. The value is derived from the direct, authenticated link between the physical object and the creator.

What it does to price

A genuine, high-quality dedication significantly increases market value. The multiplier depends heavily on the rarity of the comic and the stature of the creator. For a common, modern book, a good dedication might add 20% to 50% over a standard copy. For a key, high-grade Silver Age book, the difference can be substantial, potentially 3x to 10x the value of the unsigned equivalent. A poorly executed or illegible inscription might add only 5-10%. For example, a standard $100 copy of a key issue might sell for $150-$200 with a clean, verifiable signature.

How to spot it

Examine the inscription closely for ink bleed, pen pressure consistency, and handwriting style. Compare the signature to known, authenticated examples of the creator's autograph. Fakes often feature overly perfect or mechanical-looking signatures. Common honest mistakes include an inscription written in poor quality pen, or a signature that is too faint to read.
